Beach House - Teen Dream - 01.26.10

Postby melt » Thu Jan 28, 2010 1:54 pm

Anyone else digging their Sub Pop debut? I liked portions of their first two albums, but I'm enjoying the hell out of Teen Dream. The shoegazer-y guitars and keyboards sound so great, and the melodies are even better this time out. I am loving the soulful, almost '60s girl group feel of "Better Times" and the gorgeous dream pop of "Zebra" and "Used to Be." The singer's voice takes some getting used to (in fact my wife swears it's a dude), but it's so good.

They're hyped up by Pitchfork, but it's warranted in this case...brilliant stuff. With this, Spoon and Eels there are already three albums that I really like from this month. It's shaping up to be a nice music year.

You've just talked me into buying this. If I don't like it, you'll have made a very powerful* enemy.

Thanks for not becoming my enemy, Drebin. This is the best album so far of 2010, methinks.

Oh I absolutely love this album. The last one, Devotion, is of my favourite albums in the last couple of years. Although this one expands their sound a little, I still prefer that last one. That may change.

This is really great. Thanks for the heads up Melt. Your assessment is dead on. Love the girls voice, took no time at all getting used to it.

Hmmm...I'll have to check this out I guess. Initially, I was turned off by the band name and album title...

If the abover primate is interested, I would take a stab at describing this as She Hangs Brightly-era Mazzy Star with a dose of My Bloody Valentine shoegaze guitar shimmer/wooziness, with a Nico-esque singer in Victoria Legrand (minus the thick German accent) providing the dominant instrument. Actually the Nico comparison while apt is kind of lazy and overdone...Legrand really sounds like Patti Smith on REM's 'E-Bow the Letter'.

Anyway, a strong album and sort of a throwback. I don't know that there's anything else out there like this right now. Let's hope it (and Beach House itself) has some staying power.

Like the abover I had only a passing interest in this band before, but this album is great through and through. Likely Gamblers material.
